I love including animal characters in my Dr Midas books - I’ve featured lemurs, parrots, a capybara, llamas and a binturong among others - and I always try not to anthropomorphise them too much.
Well here’s a writing competition that requires you to really master the true nature of the animal world with a great prize on offer.
BBC Wildlife Magazine are running their Nature Writer of the Year 2008 challenge. They are looking for an essay (non-fiction) of no more than 800 words. Rules are available on the BBC Wildlife Magazine Site or from www.loveearth.com where you will also find the entry form.
The competition is open to anyone 18 and over including published writers but your essay must be original and unpublished.
Judges include BBC Wildlife Features Editor Fergus Collins and TV presenter Kate Humble.
The winner will be published in the magazine and on loveearth.com and will win one of three Earthwatch trips including flights.
The choices are monitoring dolphins off the Spanish coast, surveying butterflies in Vietnam or helping study South African brown hyenas.
The deadline is soon - Wednesday April 30th 2008.
I’m going to have to have a go at this myself - I support Earthwatch and would love to go on one of their conservation expeditions - but I know the competition is going to be really tough!
