The internet is a great place to not only find out about writing competitions but to actually take part in them. One that is currently running online is Author v Author and you can take part as a writer, a reader or both.

The competition is divided up into areas based around Johnston Press group's local newspapers - so for most Writer's Block readers that would be Lancashire Evening Post (LEP).
There are two sections - one for adults the other for children (18 and under) and you can submit as many stories up to 5,000 words each as you like - then you have to try and pursuade people to vote for you. Stories must be suitable for a family competition and you must also explain what inspired your work.
Writers can upload their work to the web (it's easy to do) and then the public act as judges giving each story a star score between one and five. Writers can also judge other stories.
To take part go to http://www.authorvauthor.com/laep - you will need to enter a few details but it's quite quick to join up. If you have trouble finding your confirmation email check your junk.

The story I have entered is called 'Earning her stripes' about the threat to the Amur Tiger and I'd love for you to read it and hopefully vote for it. Let me know if you submit a story so I can do the same for you.
Writers can also use their mobile phones to check on how their story is doing. Whoever wins the local competition will be entered into the regional competition and will then be read by a much wider audience who will also vote. Then the national competition winners' stories will be available to purchase and each winning entrant will receive their own copy as part of their prize.
The deadline for stories is Midnight on 30th April.
