Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams were inspired by a real location
Here's a chance to meet two top children's authors underground in the tunnels which inspired their popular book.
Authors Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams will visit the Williamson Tunnels, Liverpool, on Wednesday May 28 to read from their new book, Deeper, and recce the site as a potential location for the just announced Tunnels movie adaptation.
The Williamson Tunnels were a crucial source of inspiration for the authors, who write about 14-year-old Will Burrows' hunt for his missing father in a hidden underground world.
Brian Williams, a Liverpudlian who grew up in Edge Hill, explains: "I was always completely fascinated by the Williamson tunnels and every time I visited it as a child my mind would start racing about what it would be like to live underground, and the adventures that you could have. Then when Rod and I started writing Tunnels (originally self-published as The Highfield Mole) all those memories came flooding back and really helped me to get deeper into the underground world where our characters found themselves.
"I still can’t believe that we are now in a position where our book is being made into a movie and both of us are unbelievably excited about working with the producers and suggesting locations, and I just can’t imagine anywhere better to shoot those underground scenes than the Williamson Tunnels themselves - I’m really looking forward to going back to them and looking at them in that capacity – and I’m pretty confident that they’ll be at the top of our list!’
I suffer from claustrophobia so sadly I'll have to give this a miss. If you're braver than me you can book tickets for the reading from 0151 709 6868. Deeper is published on May 29, 2008.
