What makes a good hero?

I've based my hero on a mixture of people including Bruce Parry
What makes a good hero? That's something I had to really think about when creating my Dr Midas character and at first I'm afraid I made him a bit of a cliche.
Originally Dr Midas was a scatty mad professor type, Professor Branestawm meets Doctor Snuggles. I blame the moustache of course. When I started my Pirates book one of the things that I was sure of was that Dr Midas had a white boomerang shaped moustache. Perhaps I was influenced by all the Hercule Poirot books I read as a teenager or perhaps it stemmed from watching Disney's Alice in Wonderland too many times - I love the Walrus and the Carpenter section. Happily though the moustache may be far from trendy it has been essential - believe it or not - to certain storylines I've since worked on.
However feedback on Pirates soon made it clear that Dr Midas was too stereotyped. I should have realised, a rethink was necessary.
I realised that I wanted Midas to be my idea of a hero - and that had to be a mixture of Bruce Parry and Indiana Jones. Everything fell into the place and I got a much better sense of who the man was and what his flaws where. He really came to life. The revamp also enabled me to make him much younger and more physical - essential for an adventure hero.
Now thinking ahead - how do you think Daniel Craig would look with a big white moustache?
