Literary ambition seems to be rearing its head in the soaps. Ken Barlow in Corrie was questioned about his novel at his university reunion last week (it's on a backburner apparantly) and this week over In Emmerdale that minx Nicola is trying to be the next J.K Rowling in her usual underhanded way.
I haven't watched Emmerdale for a while but I'll be tuning in this week to see how accurate it is. I always find their portrayal of local journalists hilarious (they always act like they're working for a top Tabloid) so I'm not expecting great realism.
For a start success seems to come incredibly quickly for Nicola. One minute she's teasing her dad Rodney about his 'Rollercoaster Rod' book then when Terry says he loves it she's ringing round publishers passing it off as her own.
She gets her boyfriend David to act as her agent (surely someone would check his credentials) to arrange a big deal (there aren't many of them for first time authors.)
I wonder who'll be next in the soaps to take up writing? Ian Beale in EastEnders could do a guide to how to get ahead in business I suppose.
