Authorvauthor - why I don't want to be a cover star

Posted by Susan Humphreys on August 18, 2008 12:02 PM |

As you know I didn't win the authorvauthor competition but that might not stop me featuring on the cover of the anthology. I've received an email from the organisers to say writers and judges are being offered the chance to buy a first edition copy of two books featuring winning stories.

So how might I end up on the cover of the 'Winning Words' adult edition? Well the organisers also want to include a list of winners and their story titles and to feature participants pictures on the cover. You can make out my face several times on the mock up (on the authorvauthor website). I have emailed to say I do not want my picture used as I think its misleading if my story is not inside.
As I've already mentioned I also do not want my story to be kept on the website forever more (in fact I have been able to delete the name and title when given the option to load up another photo for use) and I don't really see the point of including everyone's details.
I suppose the organisers will be hoping to sell more books to non-winning participants because of the mention but at £25 I won't be tempted even if with 37 newspapers taking part there will be a lot of stories in the limited numbered hardback.
I also don't like competitions were the winners are expected to buy their own anthology - and as far as I can tell from news articles that seems to be the case here with winners receiving a pen and certificate.
The stories aren't currently on show on the website - I would imagine they want to remove winning stories or they'll have trouble selling the books. The rules aren't clear on where I stand - I would never enter any competition where I gave away the right to my story but it does state you are giving permission for your story to feature in any anthology or website (I didn't think they meant after the competition was closed, and I'm checking up on this.)
Update: I've received an email from authorvauthor to say they will remove my details which I'm pleased about.

* Rebus fans may want to tune into ITV3 tonight at 9pm for Profiling...Ian Rankin. Rankin will talk about his career and inspirations including a tour of Edinburgh. Other top authors will also give their views on the best-selling crime writer.
