Here's a great poetry competition for children aged 7 to 11 which will be judged by Children's Laureate and poet Michael Rosen.
The Old Possum's Children's Poetry Competition 2008 organised by the Children's Poetry Bookshelf is looking for poems to fit the theme 'work'. Their website says the poem could be about adults, children, animals, nature or machines. Poems must be in English and no longer than 25 lines. Entry forms and more details will be available from Thursday, September 11th so there'll be plenty of time for writing before the competition deadline is Monday, October 20th.
If you live in the U.K the prizes are £250 (first place), £100 for second and £50 for third as well as book prizes. There will be two categories - 7 to 8yrs and 9 to 11yrs. The winners will also get to meet Michael Rosen at an awards ceremony in London. The winners' schools will receive Children's Poetry Bookshelf memberships. There is also a great new category for children learning English as a second (foreign) language outside the U.K. The International Learners prizes are books for the top three poems in two age groups, again 7-8 and 9-11. Find out more at www.britishcouncil.org/kids-poetry-competition-2008
