Sayings can lead to titles which can lead to stories

Posted by Susan Humphreys on September 15, 2008 12:25 PM |

I haven't much to report at the moment I'm still keeping busy writing short stories and now have eight out for consideration. I have one which I have written about 500 words of but don't quite know where it's heading and I started another one on the Chester Park and Ride this morning.
I'm finding a lot of the time I'm coming up with a title first, being a sub-editor I have to come up with a lot of headlines so thinking up titles seems to come relatively easy to me. The latest is called 'Moving On' and the one I'm struggling with is called 'Just Desserts.'

I've started jotting down little sayings as well in case I can work an idea round them. I'm keen to write a story around 'three bags full' next in fact something's just popped into my head about that.
I'm also attempting a ghost story which I don't think I've attempted before. I believed in ghosts when I was little but I'm more sceptical now. As the nights draw in and Hallowe'en approaches I feel in the mood for some creepier tales. One thing I have learned from writing magazines and Internet sites is that you need to submit seasonal stories well in advance to magazines, so if I do write anything featuring witches and pumpkins they will be for next year. I also hear most magazines can take up to four months to consider a story and usually the longer the wait the more likely you are to get a yes as stories are read several times before being decided upon. So I'm hoping the new year might bring good news.
