Writers aged 18 and over in the North West of England have a fantastic opportunity to enter two scripts in the biennial Alfred Bradley Bursary Award.
BBC Radio Drama will offer the winner a bursary of up to £5,000, a six month mentorship with a radio drama producer and have your work produced on BBC Radio 4 with a commission for the Afternoon Play as well as the chance to develop other scripts.
To take part send a hard copy of an original 45 minute radio drama (7,000 words maximum excluding stage directions), along with a covering letter including your contact details.
To take part you must have been born, currently live or previously lived for a minimum of five years in the North of England. You must also never had a play produced by BBC Radio Drama.
Scripts will be judged on "originality, the strength of story and structure, the ability to write good dialogue, inhabit the characters, and develop convincing relationships between them."
The first ten pages of each entry will be read first by an experienced BBC writersroom reader and if of interest they will get a full read by a second BBC writersroom reader to form a longlist of 23 scripts.
The main judges - David Nobbs (writer of The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin), Amanda Dalton (poet and radio writer), Shobna Gualti (actress), Jeremy Howe (BBC Commissioning Editor for Drama, Radio 4), Kate Rowland (BBC Creative Director, New Writing) and Sue Roberts (BBC Executive Producer, Radio Drama North) - will select a winning script and runners-up from a shortlist of 13. Small individual bursaries may also be given to the runners-up of the award, who the judges feel have the potential to be developed.
