What to buy the writer in your life for Christmas

Posted by Susan Humphreys on December 9, 2008 1:32 PM |

Well Christmas is fast approaching so I thought I'd talk about what to buy would-be writers for Christmas. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

I think most writers would be pleased with any of the following:
Notebooks, now writers can be quite particular about things like margins, lined or plain, ringbound, A4 or A5 etc so it might be worth looking at what they usually use. Small ones ideal for pockets or handbags perhaps with an attached pen can be ideal too for bursts of inspirtaion.
Some writers might also be chuffed with a dictaphone for capturing ideas but I've always felt a bit silly talking into them.
Pens or pencils (Roald Dahl had a super-duper pencil sharpener at arms reach in his shed) again check what your loved one prefers. I had to use a fountain pen at school but have never liked them for everyday writing as I find them too unreliable. Then again I've never had a nice expensive one! I'm quite happy with biros although I prefer black ink to blue - coloured ones - reds and greens - can be good for editing. As I've mentioned before I love Paperchase ballpoint pens with their wacky designs.
A4 paper for typing out would also be a nice idea especially a decent weighted one, I always go for the cheapest and my printer is beginning to make funny noises. Likewise though unromantic I'd be delighted at ink cartridges in my stocking!!!
Reference books and factual DVDs are a nice gift and an up-to-date dictionary is always welcomed as in the newest Writers and Artists Yearbook.
More expensive gifts for the generous could include laptops, printers, sony readers but when starting out an old typewriter or wordprocessor can bring a smile. I remember desperately wanting an electric typewriter as a teenager and when my mum got me one (with a missing letter) from an office bankruptcy sale and I was madeup.
Finally on the dream wishlist would be a three book contract and a worldwide booktour!
