One of the last short stories I sent out has come back as a no. I'd sent Marvin the Magnificent (a story I really liked about a young magician) to the Weekly News in the summer via email.
Well a couple of days ago I got a reply - sadly not the one I'd hoped for.
Jill Finlay is well regarded by short story writers for her comments - but it seems even she has had to cut back on her personal replies as she's been overwhelmed with submissions.
In her email to me she said: "Unfortunately, I'm having to resort to a more impersonal form of reply at the moment as, due to a massive amount of submissions, time is now of the essence and I feel everyone's been waiting long enough to hear from me.
"I've had a good read through your work, but I'm afraid it's not what I'm looking for right now, so it's a no this time.
"I'm not able to go into details for the return at the moment, as, like I said, the priority at the moment is to make sure everyone's been answered and things are back up to date.
"So I'm sorry for being the bearer of bad news in a somewhat clinical style, but hopefully this won't be the case for too long.
"Please don't be discouraged from submitting and do send in anything you feel may be of interest to us, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can."
At the moment I'm putting my short stories to one side and am concentrating on my Dr Midas rewrite. I had made a reasonable start at the weekend until a nasty cold took hold. I'm still spending a lot of time thinking how to resolve plot problems caused by moving and chopping and changing scenes around. I had a good idea on the drive in to work which I must jot down for use when I get home.
I also read on the internet about a fab 17th century ship in the Vasa museum at Stockholm - anyone know how I can get there really cheaply? Vasa is also the name of the Madagascan parrots in my story!
Actually I'd also - and more realisitically - like to pay a visit to Liverpool's maritime museum again as last time it really helped me to feel the atmosphere. If you know of any other good maritime museums please let me know.

I have visited the Vasa Museum and seen the ship you mention - it's really amazing and if you can get there (we flew EasyJet from JLA quite cheaply) then it's definitely worth a visit. It's really atmospheric and I'm sure it would give you lots of inspiration.
